Abstract : The dose form necessitates extensive in-vitro and in-vivo testing for the best gastro-retentive performance in order to ensure drug release in the stomach from Gastro-retentive Drug Delivery Systems (GRDDS). Due to the high turnover rate of the mucoadhesive site, which is the mucus lining of the stomach wall, mucoadhesive systems have not been selected for GRDDS. The current review discusses several in vitro and in vivo methods for assessing the gastro-retentive effectiveness of floating and expandable forms of GRDDS.
