Abstract : Lafarge first proposed the idea of an implanted system for administering drugs with sustained release in the year 1861. It was first developed to make solid implants containing steroid hormones that could be delivered over an extended period of time. Under the skin, implantable drug delivery systems are positioned to release medications into the bloodstream without the need for additional needle insertions. "A sterile drug delivery system for subcutaneous implantation, comprising a rod-shaped polymeric inner matrix with an elongated body and two ends, and having the ability to distribute the pharmaceuticals at a controlled pace over an extended period of time."
